Crip Linguistics
Crip Linguistics is an approach to studying and understanding language that comes from disabled and neurodivergent scholars.
“Crip” is a reclaimed word from “crippled,” used by some disabled people as a proud, political identity. Crip Linguistics challenges ideas about what “normal” or “correct” language looks like. It asks us to see all forms of communication (including sign, echolalia, AAC, and body language) as valid ways of expressing meaning. It also looks at how social power shapes whose voices are heard or dismissed.
